As one of its objectives NADFAS aims to inspire young people with lasting enthusiasm for the arts and an awareness of our arts heritage and its conservation. To achieve this NADFAS encourages member societies to promote high quality visual arts activities for young people.

How are societies involved with Young Arts?
Societies work in two ways to provide opportunities for the young to gain practical experience of the arts.

Many support Young Arts Groups - junior societies with members aged 8 to 18, where groups run a programme of arts events throughout the year. Others arrange Young Arts Projects - arts related activities for an individual or a number of young people organised or sponsored by Societies.

Young Arts have teamed up with Church Recorders for an exciting new project. Church Trails for Children offers young people the opportunity to explore churches in their area and learn that there is more than meets the eye in many of these buildings!

Please contact the Area Young Arts Representative on e-mail for more information.

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH ARTISTS EXHIBITION - May 2008

Stephen Rawlings painted a triptych of himself, his father and his grandfather for his A level art portfolio whilst a pupil at The Howard of Effingham School in Surrey. This was seen at a Mole Valley NADFAS Young Arts Exhibition at Denbies in 2006 and subsequently chosen to be hung at the Mall Galleries in London in May 2008, with other A level art exhibits, during the annual exhibition of The Royal Society of British Artists. The original painting of 3 portraits was too big for the Exhibition purposes and Stephen agreed to have just one portrait framed and hung - that of his Grandfather. Stephen is currently completing a foundation course in art at The Chelsea School of Art.

This was very much appreciated by the art teaching staff and helped enormously with the schools being able to participate in the competition.

The exhibition was a huge success due to the hard work and enthusiasm of the Young Arts Representative, Wendy Moore, in managing to persuade so many schools in the Limpsfield area to take part.

THE NCPTA/NADFAS PILOT SCHEME FOR SCHOOLS IN SURREY

This was a new initiative with NADFAS Young Arts working with the NCPTA (National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations) to try and involve NADFAS Young Arts in local schools affiliated to the NCPTA.

In 2006 the following East Surrey DFAS Societies donated funds to the central pot for the NCPTA/NADFAS Pilot scheme in Surrey Schools: Betchworth, Bookham, Chipstead, Dorking, Epsom, Cobham & Oxshott, Leatherhead, Limpsfield, Lovelace, Reigate and Walton-on-the-Hill Cheam DFAS donated funds in 2007.

The art projects took place during 2007. East Surrey Area NADFAS was allocated 5 schools from the Surrey schools that applied for funding. The Young Arts Representatives from the NADFAS societies linked to a school visited their school and saw the artwork produced by the pupils with the help from the grant given to the school by NADFAS

East Surrey Schools and East Surrey NADFAS Societies involved with the NCPTA/NADFAS Pilot Scheme

Eastwick Infants School, Great Bookham, Surrey - linked with Bookham DFAS
Project: School mural depicting school life, plus events organised and run by the PTA.

Original drawings done by the children; mural artist engaged to carry out the painting of mural on school assembly hall wall. The children were very excited at seeing their drawing translated on to the school wall by the mural artist.

St Paul's C of E Primary School, Dorking Surrey - linked with Dorking DFAS
Project: Willow copse; sensory walk leading up to school garden. Two-day themed project based on the topic of 3D.

Liz Meikle (YAAR) and Dorking DFAS' YA Representative visited the school whilst the Willow Artist was helping the children build the willow tunnel. The project was part of a fun packed arts week. Eventually a flowerbed will be developed with plants to attract bees and butterflies. We were shown round the whole school where every classroom was involved in a variety of art projects. We were very impressed with the children's enthusiasm at being able to complete their designs during the course of the art week.

Queen Eleanor's School, Onslow Village, Guildford - linked with Walton-on-the- Hill DFAS
Project: Design and making of mosaic paving slabs to create a path in the Quiet Garden. Workshops held in school and all pupils to participate in designing mosaic slabs. The school also hopes to make a mosaic birdbath.

Liz Meikle (YAAR) and the YA Rep from Walton-on-the-Hill DFAS visited the school on their exhibition evening to view the mosaic path in the Quiet Garden and to see the art displays around the school the. The end result is very effective and gives the children a tranquil area to sit in. The mosaic slabs reflect different aspects of nature and insects. There are bird feeders in the trees and new shrubs have been planted. The whole project has taken several months with much support from the PTA.

Powell Corderoy Primary School, Dorking Surrey - linked with Betchworth DFAS
Powell Corderoy Schools PTA matched the grant from NADFAS and along with other funding raised by the PTA the school planned an activity fortnight linked to the National Gallery's 'Take one Picture' scheme. The School chose the National Gallery's painting by Peter Paul Rubens 'Autumn Landscape with a view of Het Steen in the early morning'. The teachers spent an Inset day at the National Gallery familiarising themselves with the painting and gathering ideas for use with the children. The children worked on art subjects relating to the painting in school, making collages, sculpture, paintings, and drawings during the art fortnight in the summer term. The whole school visited the National Gallery to view the original Rubens' painting.

The Raleigh School, West Horsley, Surrey - linked with Lovelace DFAS
Project: Willow Structure Artist to work with the children on designing and developing an outside area.

This art project with funding from NADFAS has been delayed until the spring of 2008 due to unavailability of the willow sculptor to design and plant the willow in the spring of 2007.
